Plastic Chemical May Expose Foetuses to Cancer: Agency ...
Plastic Chemical May Expose Foetuses to Cancer: Agency ...
France said Tuesday it would call for Europe-wide controls on a paper product containing bisphenol A after a watchdog agency said the widely-used chemical may expose unborn children to breast cancer later in life.Bisphenol A, or BPA, is a common component of plastic bottles and the linings of food cans, but some studies have linked it to brain and nervous system problems, reproductive disorders and obesity. It has been banned for use in baby bottles by the European Union, United States and Canada.France's ANSES food safety agency urged pregnant women to avoid food preserved in lined cans, or drinking water from polycarbonate water fountains found in many office buildings which it said was a "source of exposure to bisphenol A".It also advised them to avoid handling slips from shop tills, and urged further research into the risk of exposure for cashiers. The agency said bisphenol A could pose health risks to unborn children if their mothers ingested, inhaled or repeatedly touched products that contain it -- including thermal paper used in some kinds of cash register slips or ATM receipts.Bisphenol is also commonly found on CDs and DVDs and plastic containers used for microwave cooking or fridge storage.Ecology and Energy Minister Delphine Batho said that on the basis of the ANSES report, France would recommend that the European Commission ban the use of bisphenol A in thermal paper receipts."Until then, it is imperative that manufacturers prioritise the search for a substitute for this substance," she said in a statement. In a report summarising several global scientific studies on the topic up to July 2012, ANSES said its experts were "moderately" confident of the evidence pointing to a risk to babies in the womb, though the danger for other people remained unclear."The conclusions show that certain exposure of pregnant women to BPA poses a risk for the mammary glands of the unborn child," the agency said in a report that wrapped up a three-year investigation. The risk "may be characterised... by increased sensitivity of the mammary gland to the formation of tumours. The risk potentially concerns both sexes," said the report. There was also a possible risk for the foetus' brain, metabolism and reproductive system, it added.ANSES stressed there were still many uncertainties in the data.Advised by agencies like ANSES, the French parliament in December voted to ban BPA in baby food packaging from 2013 and in all food containers from 2015.The chemical is still used around the world in plastic products, and the United States said last year it would not impose a general ban of BPA as there was no evidence of harm to adults. In February, a report on an analysis of 150 scientific studies said bisphenol A may be used in quantities too small to affect human health.ANSES cautioned against replacing bisphenol A with a substitute from the same chemical family, saying not enough was known about other bisphenols like M, S, B, AP, AF, F and BADGE."These substances share a chemical structure," the agency pointed out. -- AFPRelaxnews

Privacy: Keeping Sensitive Data Safe When Migrating to the Cloud | Fortanix Blog
In just a handful of years, the use of cloud computing has transitioned from being a leading-edge strategy to a standard business practice. The efficiency, agility and reduced overheads created by cloud-based services are swiftly becoming essential if an organisation is to remain profitable and competitive.Gartner recently estimated that 60 percent of all organisations will be using managed cloud service offerings by 2022While most businesses are now using some form of cloud-based services, a growing number are migrating core IT infrastructure into the cloud. Analyst group Gartner recently estimated that 60 percent of all organisations will be using managed cloud service offerings by 2022, with research vice president Sig Nag stating that cloud adoption is now a mainstream practice. Most businesses using cloud services are also leaning towards more expansive strategies that use two or more providers, with further research from Gartner revealing that 81 percent of public cloud using companies have at least two different services. While there is no doubt that the powerful advantages delivered by the cloud will continue to see adoption rates grow, the move to the cloud is not without risks. Each new cloud service taken on by business will both increase the scope and complexity of their digital footprint and make it more difficult to control and combat potential threats to data. This lack of control means that, while cloud adoption rates are accelerating, many organisations are holding back from putting their most sensitive and mission critical data in the cloud.Losing control, retaining responsibilityWhile a thorough vetting process will help to ensure that cloud providers are following best security practices when they are chosen, the organisation will still have far less oversight of their datas security than it would if the information was stored within its own network or a private cloud. This issue is even more pronounced in a multi-cloud strategy, and the business will need to deal with its data being scattered across multiple different providers, each of them coming with their own set of risks. If sensitive or mission critical data is stolen by cyber criminals, it makes little difference whether the breach originated with the business itself or a third-party service provider. The company will still have to contend with the financial, legal and reputational damage of the breach. On the regulatory side, the EU GDPR and the recently enacted CCPA can fully penalise an organisation if private information is breached through a third party and essential processes such as encryption were not in place. These risks mean that relying on a third-party to protect important data is still an act of faith. While a cloud provider may assert that data is protected with encryption for example, their actual strategy may be poorly implemented. One of the most common issues is to find that a service provider has encrypted the data, but that the cryptographic keys are kept within the same infrastructure. This means that if the cloud provider is breached, the criminals will likely be able to obtain the keys along with the data and render the encryption useless. The PCI DSS takes a strong stance on this issue, mandating that card payment information cannot be stored in a public cloud if the cryptographic keys are kept on the same system. This is one of several factors holding back organisations from completing their transition to the cloud. For instance, retailers would be unable to use a public cloud to store or process essential customer and sales data.Does BYOK have the answer? The cloud industry has explored several different options to try to address these challenges and restore a sense of control to the public cloud. One of the most popular potential solutions is the use of a Bring Your Own Keys (BYOK) approach, where organisations are able to generate and manage their own encryption keys. However, most BYOK strategies will still see the encryption keys being stored in the cloud providers key management system (KMS), which means they may still be retrieved by threat actors if the providers infrastructure is breached. This also tends to be a poor fit with the increasingly multi-cloud approach, as each cloud vendor will need to provide its own KMS. As an organisations infrastructure continues to grow and add more third parties, it will become more complex and costly to manage multiple KMS.Taking full control of cloud securityOne option for benefitting from the BYOK approach while compensating its shortcomings is to implement Bring Your Own Keys Management System (BYOKMS). Organisations can generate their own keys and be in full control of managing and storing them centrally, helping to address the complexity of a multi-cloud environment. As businesses will be able to store the keys in their chosen data centre, protected by their preferred security strategies, this addresses the major failing of standard BYOK as the encryption keys are far removed from the data itself. Even if a third-party provider suffers a breach and critical data is exposed, without the keys the attackers will be unable to do anything with the stolen assets. This is a major boon for regulatory compliance. Being able to prove that sound encryption is in place will free the organisation from the obligation to alert individuals whose data was involved in the breach, as well as escaping the threat of punitive regulatory fines. In addition, ensuring that the keys are kept entirely separate to the data will also enable a firm to store encrypted payment card details in the cloud while remaining compliant with the PCI DSS.Businesses looking to successfully transition to the cloud must be able to ensure their most sensitive and mission critical data is well-secured. By taking full control of their own encryption keys, businesses can enjoy the increased efficiency and reduced costs of a cloud-led strategy without taking a leap of faith on their security.Originally published at

Photography in Lady GaGa's video?I never heard of her before I read this question. She produces some bland, tedious music. I could barely sit through the video to see the end. Just looked like regular B&W to me. They used strong forms like dark eye make-up, the lines and the black dress to make it bold. In Photoshop you could do the same thing by desaturating the image to B&W and then pumping the contrast a bit. But mostly it is the props and use of form that gave the images a "quite bold" look.8. why can't I see my laptop's video on my tv?If your TV input is DVI-I then it may work Set the TV input to the DVI port an also set it to Analog If your TV input is DVI-D then it will need a digital signal VGA is analog. Design flair and an eye for detail have helped to make handcrafted RDG jewellery a hit with celebrities here and in Los Angeles. Ken Robinson and twin sons Michael and David have made Robinson Designer Goldsmith jewellery a favourite with singer Natalie Cole and local entertainers such as singer-songwriter Boh Runga and rapper Savage. They have also shown their products off to celebrities at events based around the Oscars and MTV awards in the US. The same sort of quality control that goes into the Takapuna-based family business was brought to bear when Ken and wife Sandy started planning then oversaw the building of this three-level home. Ken, pictured below with actor William Shatner at a pre-Oscars showcase of his work in 2010, says designing it was a three-year process that began with them drawing plans for the house before passing them on to a draughtsman. Architect Darryl Sang also contributed to the design along the way. "Then we sat down with John D'Anvers over a beer at the old house just up the street and, as he does, he started sketching something out and came up with some really good ideas," says Ken. Sandy and Ken had also picked up plenty of concepts on their travels while staying in resorts and hotels. "We wanted to create a relaxed, resort-style feel," says Ken. "We didn't want to create a palace." A keen car collector, Ken reveals that they decided to remove the old home and build anew when he saw the potential for a huge basement garage. "The reason we built the house was for the good garaging and we took the house up from there," says Ken. The contour of the site also allowed construction of a water feature that runs across the front of the house beginning with a pond at the entrance, where steps seemingly float in the water. Tropical plants give this area the feeling of an oasis, reinforced by the two lofty phoenix palms. "Those are the only original trees remaining out here; we planted everything else," says Ken. "I liked them because they lent themselves to having a driveway winding through them." The home has been cleverly designed so that the main floor sits at street level for an easy flow right from the front door through the house to the rear patio with swimming pool. Rising out of its tropical setting, the home presents a dramatic facade with contrasting materials in a towering travertine marble wall alongside an 8m-high glass curtain wall. The glazed walls of the lounge in the northeast corner provide an enticing glimpse of the home from the street. An oversized pivot door creates a feeling of arrival once you cross the floating steps. It has been painted in Riverside Gold, the colour of the 1969 Chevrolet Corvettes driven by US astronauts. The resort-like feel is reinforced with a simple mix of quality materials throughout: American oak, glass balustrades and ceramic tiles used for flooring and in the bathrooms. A central atrium creates a sense of light and space with living spaces radiating from it. From here you can also enter the home theatre, or take the lift, which runs from the basement to the top floor master suite. At the rear of the home, the casual living spaces and kitchen open out to a patio protected by a LouvreTec roof and wall. This patio steps down to a lawn and in-ground pool, all framed by a formal hedge. With the family business having an increased overseas focus, Ken and Sandy are planning to travel more and keep a smaller base at Takapuna.
