The Psychology of the Crazy College Sports Fan

The longest two seconds of my life were on September 10, 2011. The Michigan Wolverines were playing Notre Dame in the first night game in Big House history with a record-breaking attendance of 114,804 fans. Michigan was winning until the fourth quarter, when Notre Dame with 30 seconds left in the game scored a touchdown, pulling ahead 3128. But while the Irish fans started puffing up their chests, Michigan fans put their heads down with determination. With the help of quarterback Denard Robinsons arm and fast feet, Michigan flew down the field and suddenly with 8 seconds left in the game was lining up just 16 yards from the end zone. Everyone expected Denard to take a knee and set up a kicker for 3 easy points that would send the game into overtime. Instead, he threw the ball. It couldnt have been in the air for more than 2 seconds, but if you asked anyone in the stadium, they would remember it as 2 minutes.I leaned toward the end zone as if the harder I leaned, the more likely the touchdown would be. I saw wide receiver Roy Roundtree sprint into the end zone and jump high into the air, turning around mid-flight. I held my breath. The ball shot into his chest just as he was hit by a Notre Dame defender. Roundtree went crashing to the ground, but had managed to hang onto the ball it was a touchdown. A win. The stadium erupted and I felt the energy course through my entire body.

Ann Arbor didnt sleep that night.

I know the crazy college sports fan well because I am one: I bow at the feet of Coach Jim Harbaugh and his infamous pleated khakis. The Michigan fight song is my ringtone. I bleed maize and blue. But what turns fans into the crazy superfans you see on the Jumbotron jumping around like monkeys with their chests painted blue? Its something deeper than what can be explained by tradition and institutional pride. A lot of smart people have wondered the same thing and have done the research to tap into the sports-obsessed mind. What theyve found is that sports fandom is not only perpetuated through society and community its biologically wired into our brains.A Sense Of BelongingMy friend Alex was born and raised in Ann Arbor by two proud alumni. He has a special photo album of his family sitting in the exact same seatsSection 42, Row 15, Seats 9-12nearly every year of his life.

As long as I can remember, Ive gone to the games and have known everything about the team, he told me. When I was little I would read the programs to memorize the number, height, weight, position and graduation year of every player.Humans have an innate desire to belong to a group. Historically, this was a survival tactic, but today, even though theres no evolutionary need for it, we long for a sense of community more than ever. So it makes sense that Alex hasnt missed a kickoff in 26 years: His identity depends on it.My crazy fandom didnt start until college. After graduating from high school in a class of 59 students and no football team, I desperately longed for a ready-made community I could cheer and cry with. I found it during my first game at the Big House. With wide eyes and a Block M sticker on my face, I entered the largest college stadium in the world and was immediately swept up in a current of enthusiastic fans pulling me toward my seat. Id never been a part of a something so much bigger than myself, full of so much spirit and pride.I knew then and there: This was where I belonged. This Is Your Body On SportsIf you dig down to the sociological and psychological rock-bed of fandom, there are scientific reasons to explain why devoted fans wear the same lucky (read: unwashed) jersey for five months each year.

During the longest two seconds of my life at the 2011 Michigan-Notre Dame game, it wasnt just my emotions that were kicked into overdrive. My palms grew sweaty and my heart rate reached a dangerously high level. I held my breath and forced myself not to blink I couldnt risk missing even a millisecond.

For a control freak like myself, its especially scary to lose my composure like this. But Im not alone. When psychologist Charles Hillman showed photos of dramatic plays to fans of the University of Florida Gators, he found that his subjects were just as stimulated looking at a spectacular end zone catch as they were looking at porn or graphic photos of animal attacks. Individuals that are highly identified with the team show extreme arousal compared to the average fan, Hillman later told the New York Times.

In other words, were evolutionarily programmed to lose our shit during every game. You can tell my downstairs neighbors I really cant help it.Get Your Brain In The GamePerhaps the most interesting research on superfandom is the effect of mirror neurons. Mirror neurons are a type of brain cell that activate when you see something emotional happen to another person. This reaction is similar to the way you might brace yourself when you see two cars almost crash on the freeway the exact same way as if you were driving one of them yourself. In 2008, researchers at Italys University of Rome published a study that found the more familiar you are with an action, the more intensely those mirror neurons are going to fire. This suggests that the brains of fans who not only watch, but also play sports essentially reenact a life-like simulation of the motion theyre seeing on their TV screens. So as fans watch their team run onto the field, their brains process that information the same way they would if they themselves were running out to the line of scrimmage. The feel-good effect of sportsThere have been a surprisingly large number of studies analyzing the testosterone levels of men after winning and losing in various competitive scenarios, both athletic and non-athletic (think chess and video games). What these studies revealed was fairly obvious: After a competition, men who won were found to have increased levels of testosterone compared with men who lost.Whats interesting about this experiment from the perspective of sports-fan science is that testosterone peaked even for guys who were playing in non-active competitions. Experiments conducted by behavioral scientist Paul Bernhardt in the early 1990s reached a similar conclusion: Bernhardt found that sports fans experienced the same rush of testosterone that the actual players did.

Additional studies by neuroscientists at Harvard University showed that as diehard fans watched their team play well, there was a dramatic rush of dopamine the feel-good chemical involved in feelings of love, lust and addiction to the brains reward centers. With one good play, researchers saw, fans happiness shifted from an emotional high to a chemical one.But what keeps fans going when they arent constantly riding high on season wins? *cough* Michigan State *cough*The simple answer is hope. The more complex answer is that when your team is on the field, your brain still produces dopamine, since its holding out hope that they might just win. In other words, fans are chemically compelled to believe that the next game will be the big win the same way gamblers are sure the next pull of the slot machine will win them the jackpot.Superfans >>> Everyone ElseThe day I moved to Chicago after graduation, I ran around the corner to grab a few essentials (coffee, wine, Cheez-Its you know, the really indispensable stuff). As I turned onto Clark Street, I heard someone shout Go Blue! When I looked up I saw a police officer in his cruiser looking right at me. I realized I was wearing one of my Michigan sweatshirts, which probably inspired his shout of solidarity. With those two words, I knew I was going to fit in just fine in Chicago. All it took was a quick reference to my beloved community to make me feel more at home than unpacking all my boxes ever would.Finding meaning within a group is not specific to sports fans you could hypothetically reap the same belonging-related benefits from gang membership, a church, an improv community or a CrossFit class. In reality, though, its hard to find such a large, obsessively-devoted group of people united by anything but sports these days.

Inflated egos and invincibilityResearchers have found that their favorite team winning a big game can give fans a feeling of invincibility. Edward Hirt, a psychologist at Indiana University who studies social cognition and judgment, performed a study on fans of the universitys basketball team. Hirt found fans to be more confident about their own sex appeal and their ability to succeed at mental and physical tests after a win than a loss. Key takeaway? Exercise restraint after a big win trying to flip a car or open a beer bottle with your teeth may not be as good an idea as it seems in the moment. But lets put late-night heroism aside for a minute: Team victories can affect your long-term well-being, too. Daniel Wann, a social psychologist who has studied fandom for more than 30 years, has found time and again that the more invested a fan is with their favorite team, the more likely they are to have a strong sense of self worth, feel connected to others and be emotionally stable.

Now if that isnt a winning combination, I dont know what is.A sense of meaningMore recently, Wann and his research team have determined that superfans also have an above-average sense of meaning in life. We found that identification wasnt necessarily leading directly to meaning, but rather it was going through belonging, Wann told Nautilus magazine. So identification leads to belonging, which in turn leads to a sense of meaning. And this makes sense, especially in terms of college football. The fandom for a school like the University of Michigan knows virtually no bounds: It boasts the largest living alumni base in the world 575,000 and growing. The superfan passion of Michigan alumni extends to their family members, spouses, children and friends, ensuring the community will continue to grow and to reinforce that sense of belonging its members hold so dear.Whos got it better than us?It turns out that the guys who flamboyantly wear their jerseys the day after a big win are actually a supremely socially connected group, that the winner-loser structure of the game makes fans well adjusted for failure and challenge in their own lives and that losing streaks are partnered with neuro-chemically programmed bursts of hope that keep us optimistic against all odds. All thanks to football

1896 College Football Season
1896 college football seasonThe 1896 college football season had no clear-cut champion, with the Official NCAA Division I Football Records Book listing Lafayette and Princeton as having been selected national champions. Lafayette finished with an 11-0-1 record while Princeton had a 10-0-1 record. In the second game of the season for both teams, Lafayette and Princeton played to a scoreless tie. Both teams had signature wins: Lafayette defeated Penn 6-4, giving the Quakers their only loss of the season, while Princeton defeated previously unbeaten Yale, 24-6, on Thanksgiving Day in the last game of the season. Princeton was retroactively named the 1896 national champions by the Billingsley Report, the Helms Athletic Foundation, the Houlgate System, and Lafayette and Princeton were named national co-champions by the National Championship Foundation and Parke Davis— — — — — —1892 college football seasonThe 1892 college football season was the season of American football played among colleges and universities in the United States during the 1892-93 academic year. All eleven players selected by Caspar Whitney and Walter Camp to the 1892 All-America college football team came from the Big Three (Yale, Harvard, and Princeton). The selections included center William H. Lewis, the first African-American All-American. Five of the honorees have been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame: quarterback Philip King, fullback Charley Brewer (Harvard), end Frank Hinkey (Yale), tackle Marshall Newell (Harvard), and guard Art Wheeler (Princeton). Several colleges and universities in the Deep South established football programs in 1892, including Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Georgia Tech, and South Carolina. In the first college football game in the region, Georgia defeated Mercer on January 30, 1892. On September 28, 1892, the first football game played outdoors at night took place, between Wyoming Seminary and Mansfield State Normal. Is LSU the Most Overrated Team in College Football History?
Is LSU the Most Overrated Team in College Football History?
I do not think they were the most overrated team of this year, so no. Michigan actually started the season in the top 251. Can college football players play after graduation? No.The NCAA has eligibility rules.First and foremost, under no circumstances can you be on a team's roster for more than four academic seasons. No ifs, ands, or buts about that.Second, you can not have academic eligibility for more than five years, and that assumes you are not on the roster for the first full academic year. That's colloquially called "redshirting". If you sit out your first year while you attend school, you are only eligible for the next four academic years in all cases.Third, you must be taking a minimum amount of academic credits each year. You do not have to take a full load (you can do a four-year degree in five years, no problem) but you do have to meet the minimum. If you are not taking the minimum number of courses, you can not play and it costs you a year of eligibility in any case. If, by some miracle, you redshirt the first year and take a full load of courses each year, and meet the academic GPA minimum, once you receive your degree, you can not then go back and take more courses. You can get eligibility if you get into a graduate program, but that's exceedingly rare.2. The most disappointing year in college football???I do not think it was disappointing. I thought it was exciting and showed why you have to play every game, and can not take any team for granted. The teams had to continue to work hard to win3. What's the best College football/College basketball, school? As of today, Texas, ranked 3rd in both football and basketball. Do not expect that to last though, Texas just lost their best player to a knee injury last night. Texas is 2nd in baseball, losing to LSU in the National Championship. Overall, we have a very good sports class this year4. What college football games are most excited for today?Texas and TTech Go TTech Florida vs Georgia which is turning out to be not even close Oregon State vs Arizona State, if Oregon State can win the rest of their game USC misses the rose bowl5. In college football, is the BCS system a fair system?Ask Boise State. Undefeated and no chance for a National Championship. BSC sucks6. Help with English Paper on College Football?penn state because joe paterno is a legend7. When are College Football preseason rankings announced?i imagine they many times pop out in early August. As for Georgia, i imagine they are going to be an exceptional crew, in all likelihood second contained in the SEC East in the back of Florida. i imagine there is definitely a large hollow between them and Tennessee, South Carolina, Kentucky, and Vanderbilt.8. Upsets for college football this weekend?Boise State could very well lose, it depends on how good Washington really is. I do not really know how good they are yet, so it will be interesting to finally find out. I also like the possiblity of TCU over Texas. Texas really seemed to struggle with lowly Arkansas State, but first games can be deceiving. I think the sleeper upset, if there is one this weekend could be USF over Auburn. USF seems pretty decent and Auburn was unimpressive against Kanas State last week.9. Is this good enough to play MLB or SS for Junior College football?California Bakersfield is o.k. You should play football middle linebacker.10. What is your favorite college football stadium?Steve Spurrier-Florida Field at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.Hot, muggy and Loud. A nightmare for opponents. Used to be a hard ticket to score. I've seen many changes to the stadium since my first game in 1966.2. Florida State's stadium. A state built edifice, built with state and student monies. Nevertheless, it is a beautiful stadium. Annoying band. 3. Williams-Brice Stadium, Columbia, SC. Home of the USC Gamecocks. A good place to watch football, excellent tailgating, superb post-game (win or lose) knowledgeable (and genteel) fans.4. LSU Tiger Stadium (Death Valley) Fans are insane. totally. Like me.Psst... It's Great to be a Florida Gator!!!.

Pennsburys Looks to Make His Mark in 2018
The senior-to-be offensive lineman is also receiving interest from college footballs elite programsBy Al ThompsonFor The TimesOnce a high school player is identified as a top college prospect, once Power Five programs including the ACC and Big Ten teams are showing interest in you, it is time to take your game, your training and expectations to the highest level possible.Pennsbury senior-to-be offensive tackle Brian has had interest from such noted programs as Navy, Rutgers, Virginia, Morgan State and Monmouth. stands 6 feet 5, weight 310 pounds and passes the eye test that those stats are legitimate. He was the lone underclassman on a mammoth Falcons offensive line that helped Pennsbury forge a 103 record overall in 2017 and a trip to the District One 6A semifinal game against Coatesville. led a line that powered senior Zach DeMarchis to have one of the best seasons in school history. The 510, 175-pound dual-threat quarterback ran for 1,439 yards and 17 TDs and also threw for over 1,800 yards while accounting for 34 touchdowns. That success surely sets the stage for a great senior campaign on the field and with recruiters who are starting to line up.Its really exciting, said in a recent phone interview. Im getting interest from those schools, and I have some more visits coming up. said the Falcons 10-win season with a major high school program led by head coach Dan McShane certainly helped put the spotlight on his play. The season definitely helped me out a little bit with getting noticed, said.Pennsbury is a run-first offense, so he has developed skills that can transfer to the guard position and that has college scouts looking at to possibly play on the inside as well as his natural tackle position. As of right now, Im getting looked at to play tackle and guard by different schools, said. It depends on which school, some see me as a tackle, some see me as a guard. At tackle, said coaches have said, For tackle its my footwork and pass protection, said. For my size, they say Im pretty light on my feet. As far as guard, I love the run game, you knowIts about overpowering people.McShane said he will lean on to be the leader this fall.Brian is a very athletic and powerful kid, McShane said. He has a real motor and loves to compete. He will lead a young group of offensive linemen to continue to play the Pennsbury football physical style of play. The coach said because of s ability both on the field and in the classroom, the sky is the limit for his blocker.Brian is a strong student, McShane said. And combined with his athletic talents, I can see him playing football at a great school with a tradition of football success. If a major university is going to invest its resources in a student-athlete, there has to be confidence that players love what the program does. Coaches want to see this is not just about getting a scholarship. The program wants to know that motivation will not be a problem once the student and institution agree to go forward with their relationship that could be for the next five years. wanted to put to rest any idea that he is anything but 100 percent motivated to be the best he can be.Of course I love to play football, said. I just started playing in ninth grade. I was an AAU basketball player before that. It was definitely the right move, I put on the weight and its paying off.Linemen never get the ball unless its a fumble recovery. So what is it about playing line that attracts to football?Obviously playing offensive line, you dont get the limelight, said. Im OK with that. I pride myself in being a tough football player. In order to be an offensive lineman, you need to be a tough football player. said hed like to see more of the field this season. He wants to help on the defensive line if coach McShane thinks he can be productive.Theres been some talk of me being in the rotation, said. At the nose or the three-tech. Id like to do that, too. It would be fun.Like any high school player, watches the NFL on Sundays and visualizes about the day he could wear an NFL uniform.Of course I think about the NFL, said. Its everybodys dream, especially if you are a high school football player. talked about the NFL linemen he admires most.At the guard position, I like watching (Buffalo Bills) Richie Incognito, said. At the tackle position, I like watching (Dallas Cowboys) Tyron Smith and definitely (Eagles) Jason Peters.Like a lot of his fans, especially in Buffalo, was sad to hear the news Incognito had decided to retire, citing health issuesHes probably one of the best guards in the game at the moment, said. also talked about how he is training in the offseason. My focus is on strength and conditioning, getting stronger and getting in better shape for next season. said, for training over the holidays and throughout the winter, he sought the help of former Pennsbury star J.J. Denman, who later was a standout offensive tackle for Rutgers. He showed me things in pass protection I found that I really like to use now, said. More vertical stretch and stuff like that. He also showed me what its like to lift as a collegiate offensive lineman, which I thought was pretty fun. Me and (senior OL) Nika Wright also lifted with him. said Wright will continue his college career at West Chester University with DeMarchis.Last year, the Falcons finished with a great overall record. As outstanding as the record was on its own, Pennsbury lost to archrival Neshaminy for the Suburban One League National Conference title but defeated the Redskins in the second round of the playoffs 3617 before losing to Coatesville 422.Certainly winning two playoff games in the toughest level of high school football in Pennsylvania is something to be proud of, but the Falcons didnt get any banners. wants to put some of those honors in the schools hallways after next fall.Definitely were looking to get some banners next year, said. Its probably every high school teams goal but all in all, I just hope we have a really good regular season and beat the teams that matter, obviously Neshaminy is one of them. Thats where we want to be. ·RELATED QUESTIONCollege Football: Bowls or Playoffs? And why?I personally like the bowls, however I can see how the playoffs would be good because you could have one team that plays a bunch of nobodys but looks better than a team with a loss to a really good opponent. So I could go either way. I really don't think they're going to change anything any time soon anyway though

VC Sports MonitorFollowNov 26, 2016 · 2 min readTennessee Volunteers (8-3 SU, 5-6 ATS) vs. Vanderbilt Commodores (5-6 SU, 6-5 ATS)NCAAF: Saturday, November 26, 2016 at 7:30 p.m.Where: Vanderbilt Stadium in Nashville, TennesseeLine: Tennessee -7. 5Total: 55 by Fred Berns of King Sports PicksVolunteer state rivals will face off Saturday night in Vanderbilt Stadium as #17 Tennessee Volunteers visit the Vanderbilt Commodores. The Volunteers will come into this as winners of three in a row, most recently a 63-37 beat down against Missouri while the Commodores were able to come up big in a 38-17 win against Ole Miss. Vanderbilt's defense has been excellent of late, not giving up more than 26 points in any of their previous 5 games. Will the Commodores knock off another SEC opponent?Tennessee QB Joshua Dobbs showed up big last week in their win over Missouri. Dobbs threw for 223 yards, 3 touchdowns and rushed for another 190 yards and 2 touchdowns. These stats were exactly what the Volunteers had hoped for the entire season. However, three straight losses in October to Texas A&M, Alabama and South Carolina derailed talks of a major bowl game. Nevertheless, a win over Vandy would give them 9 wins and a chance at a 10 win season if they win out. Yards and points will come at a premium tonight as Vanderbilt's defense has been playing very well and the Commodores will have extra incentive to knock of a top 25 interstate rival. Vanderbilt would love to get . 500 with a win over Tennessee. The Commodores have had some close losses to Georgia, Kentucky and Auburn but for the most part they have played tough the entire season. Their offense has revolved around RB Ralph Webb who has amassed 1058 yards and 10 touchdowns and averages 5.1 yards per carry. Expect Webb to have another big game considering Tennessee has the second worst rushing defense in the conference, letting opponents gash the team for 235. 27 rushing yards per game. Vandy is (3-2) on the season at home while Tennessee is (2-2) away. The Volunteers are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 road games vs a team with a losing home record and they are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 road games. Vandy is 4-1 ATS vs a team with a winning record and the Under is 8-2 in their last 10 meetings. Tennessee has won 31 of the past 34 meetings with Vanderbilt and is 15-1 in Nashville since 1983. This should be a hard fought game that sometimes plays out differently then the records or rankings. I think -7.5 points may be too much with to lay with Tennessee's sloppy road play this year. : Vanderbilt 7.5Why not restructure college football conferences?Nah, that wo not work. Just put teams like Utah, Boise St, TCU in a seperate conference and make it a BCS conf. Hell, you could throw Notre Dame in there tooWhich college football team should I follow? Most Definately the University of ArizonaWhy does the triple option not work in College Football anymore?Unless you have best offensive tackles, then it may working againWould College football playoffs water down regular season?yes it would down the regular seasonIf there was a college football playoff who would be your 8 teams?1 LSU 2 ALA 3 ARK 4 OKL ST 5 STAN 6 OKL 7 ORE 8 BOISEWhat is everyones reaction to this entire college football season? It's been about three months of "What the ?"wondering about a college football statThe HB does get all 10What do you like better NFL or college football? The NFL is too automatic and business like. The College game is much more open and diverse resulting in a much more exciting atmosphereWhy is it okay for college football teams to run up the score?it would actually b better/less people worried in pro than in college they (pros) get paid; if they do not perform, the coach/players go u can not do that in college so much also, college teams tend to be more set, a team is usually dominant for several decades in college; pros only for about 5 years also, the ranking system (with people) considers win margins and opponents when choosing who is what rank; a small win against a team significantly worse than u looks bad, and makes others think u are not as good as u r. i personally do not like running up the score, and would rather c some younger players get more xp, but that's how the system is and is followed

What is the most underrated rivalry in college football?Cal vs. Stanford in The Big Game. Often lost in the glare from those teams further south8. what should I wear to college football game?Jeans and a Cute sweater will be just fine. A team sweatshirt is even better and probabaly much warmer considering you can put layers under it9. Favorite NFL and College football teams?NFL- Indianapolis Colts College- USC10. AHHH i hate college football!!!!!!!!?Look, quit acting like a sissy and show college football respect. you see, many Americans watch College Football11. How does college football pick its champ?BCS is Bowl Championship Series. A national "champion" is determined in the final Bowl game the National Championship game which will be held next Monday between Ohio State and Florida. These teams were selected to play based on a computer ranking of how good they are and coach's polls.12. Are rivalries take too seriously in college football?I do not think so, I think some rivalry is good and fun13. What are the worst teams in junior college football?Tuba City (AZ) Community College and Lackawanna (PA) Junior College are the worst. In both cases, one third of their team are girls14. Do I have the potential to play college football?Dude regardless of your stats you can do anything you want to. You gotta have the heart and the smart but if you study hard enough and practice enough you got a chance at whatever you want. Yeah only1% make it, ok.. Well that 1% started just like you, and im sure that they asked some of the same questions at one point too. So give it hell and practice, study, and train15. Why the sudden question of the #1 team in College football?sounds like someones is getting worried.really i would love for ohio to stay no#1 it would make the championship easier for LSU remember last year loser16. What is the best college football movie ever? You are correct, Rudy is defintely the best and my favorite football movie. its inspirational and all good. gotta love that17. The most overrated team this year in college football is?1) the team we are not supposed to mention 2) Louisville 3) Virginia Tech 4) UCLA 5) Tennessee 6) Wisconsin 7) Hawaii 8) Boise State 9) Auburn 10) USC (do not get your undies in a bunch, I mean South Carolina)18. How long is half time in a college football game?Usually, it's 15 minutes. But, there are situations where it can be longer, especially for bowl games. I believe the NCAA allows schools to extend the halftime of their "homecoming" games to 20 minutes and some "rivalry" games are allowed longer halftimes, as well.

An overview of college footballThe 1991 Kentucky Wildcats football team represented the University of Kentucky in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) during the 1991 NCAA Division I-A football season. In their second season under head coach Bill Curry, the Wildcats compiled a 38 record (07 against SEC opponents), finished in last place in the SEC, and were outscored by their opponents, 268 to 190. The team played its home games in Commonwealth Stadium in Lexington, Kentucky. The team's statistical leaders included Pookie Jones with 954 passing yards, Terry Samuels with 307 rushing yards, and Neal Clark with 647 receiving yards.Offensive selections of college footballReceiversSammy Milner, Miss. He became one of only a handful of college athletes to reach the NFL without playing any college football. In the first preseason game, while returning a kick against the Los Angeles Rams, his cheekbone was fractured when one of his teammates knocked a defender into his path just as he was speeding toward a hole. The injury delayed his development several weeks, but he still made the team as a wide receiver and kickoff returner. Howard was the third receiver on the Cowboys during the 1975 season. Unfortunately for him, the top two receivers Drew Pearson and Golden Richards played virtually every offensive snap, and the Cowboys did not use formations with three receivers. He played primarily on special teams during the regular season, and his only statistical contributions were a pair of kickoff returns for 51 total yards. That season the team reached Super Bowl X, which ended up being something of a homecoming for Howard, because the Cowboys were encamped in Fort Lauderdale. In fact, when the Dallas charter landed at the airport, the Dillard High School marching band was there to greet him.Late in Super Bowl X, Howard got a rare opportunity to play on offense, when Richards broke a rib. With the Pittsburgh Steelers leading by 11 points with less than two minutes to go, Howard caught a 34-yard touchdown pass from Roger Staubach over Mel Blount, cutting the deficit to four points. A late turnover by the Steelers gave the Cowboys a shot to win the game at the end, and Howard was again involved on a last-second Hail Mary pass by Staubach, but he had three Steelers on him and when he leaped to make the catch, the ball was tipped away. His Super Bowl touchdown made him the second rookie ever to score a Super Bowl touchdown after Duane Thomas in Super Bowl V.The following year big things were expected from Howard, but in a 1976 preseason game against the Denver Broncos, he severely injured his right knee while running a reverse. He spent the rest of the season rehabilitating the knee, only to be injured again during a veteran's orientation session in the 1977 training camp, causing him to miss the entire season. For Super Bowl XII he served the Cowboys in a scouting role since he was still trying to recover from his injury. He was released by Dallas before the 1978 season and claimed by the Green Bay Packers, but failed his physical with the Packers as his knee had never fully recovered. The 34 yard touchdown catch in Super Bowl X, turned out to be Howard's only career reception and his last game in the NFL. Still, he would become part of the Cowboys lore and was named #6 on NFL Top 10's Top Ten One-Shot Wonders.
Problems of Phased Array Ground Penetrating Radar Detection System
Problems of Phased Array Ground Penetrating Radar Detection System
Although GPR has been widely used in hydrology, engineering, environment and other fields, many basic theoretical and technical problems have not been fundamentally solved, so the real advantages of GPR have not been brought into full play. The main problems existing in GPR technology include:1) The detection depth is shallow, and the contradiction between detection depth and resolution cannot be overcome. Increasing detection depth means sacrificing detection resolution;2) Multiple spread and other clutter jamming are serious, and there has been no good elimination method, which exists in radars at home and abroad;3) The influence of medium unevenness is great and can not be eliminated, resulting in difficulty in obtaining necessary velocity data;4) The data collection method of single sending and single receiving can provide limited information for post-processing and interpretation. The above problems are fatal defects for GPR. Although many geophysicists, electromagnetic experts and geophysical workers have done a lot of research and improvement on radar antenna design, signal processing and underground target imaging, these works are only partial modifications to the existing GPR system. In order to develop GPR technology, we must update our ideas and solve the problems from the fundamental principle. In view of this situation, experts proposed to develop a new GPR system - phased array GPR detection system in 1999.The basic research idea is to replace the current monopole radar antenna with the phased array radar antenna by using the relatively mature military phased array radar technology. Its purpose is to gather the electromagnetic wave into a narrow beam to transmit underground (or detection object) through the phased array technology, and receive the radar echo signal reflected by the target by using the multi-channel acquisition technology, The advanced data processing is carried out, and finally the three-dimensional image of the internal structure of the detection object is given.Development prospect of ground penetrating radar technologyIt is worth noting that at present, similar products have appeared in the market, such as RIS antenna array series of a company, but these products simply combine multiple monopole antennas into array antennas, which is essentially different from the idea of phased array ground penetrating radar.Because the phased array radar converges the electromagnetic wave into a narrow beam by controlling the phase delay of each channel, the energy is concentrated and the wave front diffusion is small. Therefore, the detection depth of the phased array radar is much larger under the condition of the same frequency and transmission power; On the contrary, under the same detection depth, phased array radar can improve the transmission power, so its resolution is much higher than the existing radar. In addition, since the spherical wave transmission is changed to beam transmission, the influence of medium heterogeneity is much smaller.Secondly, the phased array radar works in a continuous scanning mode and can scan in multiple directions. Therefore, the amount of information is much larger than that of the existing ground penetrating radar. For some special detection work, such as the quality detection of embankment cut-off wall, its role is unmatched by the existing ground penetrating radar (monopole antenna radar can not detect the joints, forks and other defects of embankment cut-off wall at all).Because phased array radar is a multi-channel received signal, multi-channel superposition can be carried out, just like the multiple coverage technology of reflection seismic exploration. Therefore, multiple interference can be greatly eliminated, which is difficult for existing radars. The antenna of high frequency (600mhz-1ghz) phased array ground penetrating radar can be made smaller, and its advantages are unmatched by the existing ground penetrating radar in shallow detection. At present, the system prototype has been completed. The carrier free pulse working system with center frequency of 900MHz is adopted, and the transmitting and receiving antennas are separated. 16 (4 × 4) Transmit channel forming, beam aggregation and scanning 16 (4) × 4) The channel receives the echo, and the optional scanning angles are - 36 °, - 24 °, - 12 °, 0 °, 12 °, 24 ° and 36 °.The software part of the system has rich data processing functions. The main conventional processing includes filtering, gain adjustment, static and dynamic correction, deconvolution, complex signal analysis, time-frequency analysis, etc., and multi-channel data processing, such as velocity analysis, superposition technology, coherence analysis technology, array signal processing, etc. And weak signal extraction, target automatic recognition and inversion interpretation under various clutter interference. A large number of field experiments on concrete detection in Yichang Three Gorges dam are carried out. The experimental results show that the spotlight scanning function of phased array radar has been realized, the penetration depth is greater than 1.5m and the resolution is higher than that of ordinary radar.Editing: hfy

Suggestions for Journaling, Bullet Notes, Activity, Wiki Like Application
So I am thinking of a possible answer to my own question:Build my own journal note entry app linked to a wiki.Zim Wiki uses a file based system for wiki. Maybe I could write app to export/sync entries in its files. Or WikkaWikki uses a MySQL (which is probably what I would use for journal entries anyway) so perhaps use same DB for Wiki and journal, with Journal app "doing right thing" to enter/sync Entries in wiki.Does this seem like a good approach?Or maybe I can customize a wiki with existing plugins - "All" I really need is good journaling / date feature, time tracking, checklist, and tags. Perhaps there already are plugins for this? Please comment if you have feedback on this idea.1. Circular tag wiki excerptsTag excerpts should at least try and give a concise definition as to the subject, and provided any usage guidance if necessary. Therefore, you need to make sure to address a set of key points:In general, excerpts should provide at least some guidance, even if it may appear to be ridiculously basic. Therefore, interpretation of the rejection reason is critical:That's like saying, [abs]: For questions about [abs] filaments. That should probably be rejected. This is better: [abs]: For questions about [abs] filaments - filaments that are used with blah blah printers, and are not toxic for use.Or even better: [abs]: For questions about [abs] filaments - filaments that are used with blah blah printers, and are not toxic for use. Not to be confused with [pla] filaments. Do not use this tag if your question does not concern this filament specifically. Obviously, I have no idea if abs is even a thing. Anyways, I hope this helps :)2. Why is this answer a community wiki?Apparently the answer under scrutiny was made CW because it drew on an answer from another Stack site, and the answerer wanted to share it without being associated with it for good or for ill.But community wiki is not a tool for reputation denial (or for dodging the repercussions of questionable-quality answers) and practically speaking I see no difference between quoting a different Stack and quoting a blog or a book. We would never expect someone to eschew rep for quoting a blog or a book. The answerer went to the trouble of tracking down the information and sharing it; why should not rep gains should reflect that? The moderation team is under no obligation to revert the CW in this case, nor are they obligated to leave it be, but I would lean toward reverting it myself, for reasons which follow. We've talked about posting answers from other sites, and it's pretty clear this is not cheese.Community wiki used to be massively overused. Changes to the editing system rendered its original purpose largely moot, and there's now a lot of confusion about CW's role in the Stack mechanics. These days there are three basic reasons to use CW:I do not see this particular answer needing CW to make it "easier to edit and maintain by a wider group of users," so I do not see any reason for it to be a community wiki. Community wiki is a tool with a specific set of uses, and CW rollbacks are left to mod discretion. One of the responsibilities of our moderators is to help the community use the right tools for the job at hand.As for the answer itself--it's not very good by lit.se standards, because it was written for a different site with different priorities. And the question itself is under a tag whose implementation is still being debated, so quality there is... in flux, I suppose we could say. We need to bring in our own expertise and tailor the answer to meet the expectations of our own Stack.3. Need to Change Edit Approval Limits for Tag Wiki EditorsI just upped it from 3 to 5. Hopefully this alleviates the issue a bit. If we still notice a pattern of users being blocked we can look at adjusting further4. Difference between Wiki Library and Document LibraryYes there is difference, Below might be helpful to understand.Document library can contains documents, it can be any document like office documetnts doc, xls, ppt, js, css, jpg, png etc...any file extension you can think of. Main purpose of document library is to store documents. wiki library is a kind of document library which contains wiki pages, Wiki pages are html pages with rich text editing capabilities so that users can create pages using Rich Text Editor without knowing html in detail. So when wiki library template is selected it comes with some default columns created based on content type, this columns are useful to create wiki page. Making changes and edits in a wiki page is incredibly easy. Just click on the edit button (at the top of the page) and immediately the page appears as an editor's version of the page. You can then make edits straight away and simply hit save. The page will instantly be up and running with your changes in place.
How Many NCAA Football Bowls Are There?
How Many NCAA Football Bowls Are There?
About 8 I think1. where can i get ncaa football 10 rosters with names? For the last two years I got mine from "Pastapadre". From what i can tell they are really pretty accurate. Give it a shot2. where can I watch NCAA football games for free?...?Try channelsurfing.net. They pick up a lot of justin.tv stuff, and they have loads of ncaa football games, free, no spam, etc. I watch all the time with no problems3. Can you download a team on NCAA Football 10's Team Builder using a flash drive? Why would you want to do that? Build your own team. Do not take the wussy way out.4. NCAA Football 13 Heisman Challenge 3 Player Pack? The exclusive Heisman Challenge 3-Player Pack including Mark Ingram, Tim Tebow and Matt Leinart. See if you can match the career accomplishments of these former Heisman trophy winners in the all new Heisman Challenge Mode. Its come with your ordered game copy5. What ncaa football team is your favorite one?Oklahoma SOONERS!6. I want to do a dynasty in NCAA Football 14 what team should I use (I want it to be a challenge like a weaker)?Vanderbilt, they are in a great conference and are already headed in the right direction as far as getting better and it will be a challenge because you will be in the SEC7. does ncaa football deserve a playoffs instead of bowl games being based off of BCS rankings?Whether or not the NCAA deserves a playoff does not matter. They do not want one so they do not have one. Frankly, the national championship playoff debate is a joke. This is something created by sportswriters and tolkshow hosts for the sole benefit of sportswriters and talkshow hosts. The NCAA does not recognize a national champion of the FBS so any discussion about who should or should not be the champion is pointless bloviating. Win your conference. Beat your rivals. Go to a bowl game. Those are the only things that matter in college football.8. What was determining the NCAA football title like in pre-BCS years?Hawaii, is not a very reliable team, yet might desire to win the Sugar Bowl in simple terms as surely as Georgia as a results of fact their offense constantly performs like its at the back of and it wears down the protection whilst they might desire to conceal the whole field. The unfold offense is the excellent offense in college soccer. It supplies much less gifted communities liek Hawaii and Illinois a gamble to beat far extra gifted communities. that's alsovery risky, that's why some exceptionally ranked communities dont run it. Hawaii surely did no longer deserve a identify shot in simple terms as a results of fact Boise State gained The Fiesta Bowl. Boise beat a BCS convention team who complete 10-4(Oregon State who beat USC and Hawaii in Hawaii) Hawaii has no high quality wins and does not deserve a NT shot. ending undefeated might desire to get you a BCS sport nevertheless9. NCAA Football 2009-What Defense to run online?Usually the defense package that comes with the team you are using as the best combo of players are on the field10. Which Championship/Playoff Picture needs more work....the NFL or NCAA Football?everybody keeps blaming the computers, but the computers are pretty much the only good part about the BCS, it only counts as 1/3 anyways. another 1/3 is coaches, former players, former athletic directors and people like that, the other third is the media. a lot of voters admitted to not even watching a utah game until they played alabama, how messed up is that. so lets put the blame where it really belongs, the stupid voters, who do not educate themselves about what or who they vote for11. could an NCAA football team beat a weak pro team?No-NCAA teams always have weak links and for the most part are BOYS.NFL teams have chosen the best of the best, and are MEN12. What teams rush the ball the most in ncaa football?its either navy or army one of them thats pretty much all they do13. What D1-AA teams are in NCAA Football 08?Usually they are. Just check out some of the SEC teams schedules. You find a lot of them there. Looks like the truth hurts down there!
